Although
securing victory is the immediate objective, Proteas head coach Jenny van Dyk
believes the team's focus extends beyond the final scoreline.
"Connection
is key, a good impactful start to the tournament is important," said Van
Dyk, highlighting the importance of building cohesion and establishing a strong
foundation for the matches ahead.
Malawi
have established themselves as one of Africa's strongest netball nations and
continue to improve on the international stage. Having faced the Queens on
several occasions, the Proteas are well aware of the challenge that awaits.
"Malawi
has showed great improvement. We have played this team a few times and know
what they are capable of. A disciplined, relentless but effective approach is
important," Van Dyk explained.
The
Commonwealth Games bring with them immense expectation and pressure, but the
Proteas coaching staff have placed significant emphasis on ensuring the players
are mentally prepared for the occasion.
"We
have an athlete-driven approach and use multiple strategies to get our players
ready for competition," Van Dyk said, underlining the team's commitment to
empowering players to perform at their best on the biggest stage.
With
every pool match carrying significant weight, Van Dyk stressed that making a
positive statement in the tournament opener could prove crucial in the race for
a medal. "It's instrumental. All teams have prepared well and are ready to
compete; no team can be underestimated," she added.
A
victory over Malawi would not only give South Africa valuable points but also
provide confidence and momentum heading into the remainder of the group stages.
With two of Africa's top netball nations set to battle under the Glasgow
lights, fans can expect an intense, high-quality contest as the Proteas look to
begin their Commonwealth Games journey on a winning note.
